Inlays & Onlays

These are strong, reliable and long lasting restorations that are used to repair a cavity or fractured tooth surface. They are more conservative of your natural tooth structure compared to crowns and can be used to restore the function, appearance and strength of your damaged tooth.

Inlays and onlays can be made from porcelain, gold, or composite or ceramic resin, although porcelain is becoming the material of choice because of its strength and potential to match the natural colour of your tooth.

The procedure involves two visits – at the first one, the old filling or decay is removed and the tooth is prepared for the inlay or onlay. An impression is taken and the inlay/onlay is custom made in a laboratory to fit your prepared cavity.

A temporary dressing is placed in the tooth until your next visit when the inlay/onlay is cemented into place. Your dentist will ensure it accurately fits and there is no interference with your bite and it is then finally polished smooth for you.
