Orthopaedics
This is the branch of dentistry which helps to align and correct jaw position and size. When used at the correct age and with the correct appliance, it can be excellent to allow the teeth to erupt into the correct position and avoid the need to have extractions later in development. The types of appliances are known as Schwarz Plates and Crozat appliances and are very easy to wear for children.
How do I know my Child may need Orthopaedics?
- If your child has 'buck' or 'sticky out teeth'. It may be a due to the front teeth too far forward or the lower jaw too far back. This is known as an overbite.
- If their teeth are too crowded and growing in the palate or high under the lips.
- If the lower teeth are in front of the upper teeth. This may be an underdeveloped upper jaw.
- If the upper back teeth are inside the bite of the lower teeth, your child may have a dental cross bite.
- If there is a gap in between the upper and lower tooth when your child bites down. They may have an Anterior Open Bite.
